Budich said the safest bet is to either buy studded tires, which can range from $75 to $150 each, or take the do-it-yourself approach and make your own studded knobbies. Then the inside of the tire must be covered with duct tape or tire liners to prevent the screws from loosening.

"When you crash, it's not going to hurt as much."
